Since the concept of “Materiobiology” was first proposed by Academician Changsheng Liu, it has attracted wide attention and recognition from many well-known scholars at home and abroad. In order to further study the key scientific issues of materiobiology and clarify the development direction of the discipline, the "1st International Symposium of Materiobiology" was held in East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) in Oct 23-24, 2019. More than 100 scholars in the field of materiobiology at home and abroad attended the conference.
The opening ceremony of the meeting was chaired by Li Yongsheng, director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Division of ECUST. Academician Liu Changsheng then extended a warm welcome and thanks to the experts and scholars and young talents at home and abroad. He pointed out that materiobiology focuses on the role of biomaterials in mediating life activities, and aims to explore the cellular responses, tissue formation, immune characteristics, and microenvironment regulation of various biomaterials in the body. Biomaterials is identifying specific biological effects produced by biologically active molecules, material properties, mechanical stimuli, etc. It establishes joint properties of material properties and biological functions, creats biomaterial databases, and provids theoretical support for the design of new materials.
The conference invited 13 well-known experts in China and on abroad for giving the theme reports, including Professor Joachim Kohn of the University of New Jersey, Professor Yin Xiao of Queensland University of Technology, Professor Jiandong Ding of Fudan University, Professor Guangjun Nie of China National Nano Center, Professor Yufeng Zheng of Peking University, and Professor Kaushal Rege of Arizona State University. During the meeting, the experts shared the latest research results in materiobiology, revealing the wonderful connection between biomaterials, cells and tissues from various aspects such as the physical and chemical properties of biomaterials, immune microenvironment, cell response, and tissue engineering. The experts conducted in-depth exchanges on their respective research directions, and jointly explored the theories related to a wide range of disciplines, providing opportunities for more extensive cooperation in experiments and clinical translation.

Report by Academician Changsheng Liu entitled "Materiobiology Decoding: The Multiple Roles of Biomaterials in Participating in Life Activities"
Report by Professor Joachim Kohn entitled "Effects of Biomaterials on Cell and Stem Cell Differentiation"
Professor Yin Xiao's report entitled "Inflammatory response in tissue repair and regeneration"
Professor Jiandong Ding's report entitled "Interaction between Cells and Materials Revealed by Micropatterns on the Surface of Materials"
Professor Kaushal Rege's report entitled "Peptide Biomaterials for Tissue Closure and Repair"
At the closing ceremony, Professor Joachim Kohn pointed out that materiobiology has important guiding significance for the design and construction of the next generation of biomaterials. The conference described material biology from multiple aspects and provided a basis for the future development of materiobiology. It laid a solid foundation and pointed out a clear direction for development.
